Before Painting or Designing, Prep Your Nails
While I’m not a nail tech, I appreciate doing my own natural nails. Before I start any manicure, I make sure my nails are in good health. If my nails are brittle because I used a cheap polish or 100% acetone too often, then I skip doing nail polish. I want my natural nails to be strong and healthy before being cute. Here are a few things I do to keep my natural nails healthy:
- After washing my hands, I always use a rich creamy lotion or 100% pure grapeseed oil to keep my skin and nails from drying out.
- If I’m getting hangnails or my nails are brittle and peeling, then I’ll use a cuticle and nail oil to genuinely target the damaged areas better.
- Always file the jagged edges to keep nail polish from chipping.
- Buffer the rough bits off the nail bed surface so polish paints on smoothly.
- Use a nail treatment to stimulate and encourage growth.
- Sometimes, I like to do an oil bath, which is something I learned from my mother and she learned it from my grandmother who was a licensed beautician. Take a bowl of warm water, add 1 lemon wedge, a drop of dishwashing liquid (yes, dishwashing liquid) and olive oil, let nails and cuticles soak for 5 minutes. Then use the lemon wedge and rub each finger and nail with it and submerge back into water for a couple of more minutes. Skin and nails feel softer, cleaner and smoother.
