SOFTBALL CONTINUES TO COMPETE FOR GCC CHAMPIONSHIP

The Mustangs started the week off strong with a 22-0 win over Cleveland Heights where Madison Rishel went 3-4 and Addison Heidenhoffer was strong in the circle throwing a no hitter/shutout through 4 innings and Abby Lang coming in the 5th. The team continued strong through Tuesday where we celebrated all 8 of our seniors in a senior night victory over St. Joesph Academy 20-5. The highlight of the evening was senior Baldwin Wallace commit Emily Dunlap hitting a grand slam during the game. Addison Heidenhoffer was strong through 4 innings of gameplay striking out 7. Wednesday we traveled to North Royalton where we took on the Bears in a 13-4 win. Devan Adams led the charge with 6 RBI and her first career homerun! Addison Heidenhoffer was also strong at the plate with two doubles and Brianna Ensworth wen 3-5 with 3 RBIs. Heading into the Friday the Mustangs were looking to beat the Brusnwick Blue Devils for the first time since a sectional win in 2021. Madison Rishel, Bri Ensworth, and Devan Adams with 3-4 with Bri Ensworth having two doubles on the day. Tori Kakos led the team with 3 RBI. Addison Heidenhoffer had a strong presence in the circle again while having 0 walks on the day. Saturday the Mustangs traveled to Willoughby South and things didn’t fall their way with a 8-11 loss and a 1-15 loss. They are back in action this week Monday at Medina, Tuesday at Shaker, Wednesday home vs Brunswick, Friday home vs Holy Name and Saturday at North Olmsted. The team is now 7-8 overall and 4-1 in GCC play.

BASEBALL STILL COMPETING AGAINST SOME OF OHIO’S TOP RANKED TEAMS

VARSITY

The Varsity enters Week 5 with a 6-7 record under new Head Coach Collin Pecoraro. The Mustangs have run the gauntlet in the early going, facing 7 top 20 teams in the State Coaches Poll, including the current #1,2,3! Highlights included wins over Massilon Jackson, St Ignatius and Medina, as well as a 5-4 walk off loss to Akron Hoban.

The Mustang pitching staff has been solid in the opening weeks, limiting the opposition to a meager .224 BA and an efficient 3.62 pitches/batter. The defense also has been strong, with the Mustangs picking it at a .930 clip. The bats, however, have been slow to shake off the winter chill, with a team BA of .221. Over the last 8 games, however, the guys have been swinging it at a .268 pace, so the hope is that the Spring thaw is on.

The Mustangs take a 2-1 GCC record into Week 5 and the heart of the conference schedule.

JV

The Junior Mustangs are split into two squads for the 2024 campaign. The JVA squad sports a 3-5 record, while the JVB gang has a record of 1-2. Weather has been the toughest opponent to date, with several games lost to rain and field conditions. The plan is for our young Mustangs to find more games as the weather improves in May. Until then, the guys continue to work hard under the watchful eye of Head JV coach Mike Byrne.

BOYS LACROSSE CONTINUES TO PLAY TOUGH GAMES

The Varsity team went 1-2, while JV went 3-0 last weekThey started off the week with a sweep on Tuesday against Mentor. Varsity won 13-5 and JV won 8-3.

Thursday Varsity lost a close game to Avon Lake 6-5 while JV won 4-0.

Saturday, it was the Mustangs Youth Day where all youth players and families were invited to play and watch the high school teams. The Varsity team lost 10-5 while JV won again with a score of 6-4.

GIRLS LACROSSE CONTINUES TO CHALLENGE THEMSELVES WITH TOUGH SCHEDULE

Last week the Varsity went 2-2 with wins against Mentor and Olentangy and losses to both Jackson and Worthington Kilbourne. The team went 1-1 at the HG tournament, but played a highly ranked team (Kilbourne 5th) and stayed competitive throughout the game. We will celebrate this small victory and stay committed towards our focus on growth. We will work on the fine details that can help lead us to more victories. As a constant reminder, this season has been about building towards a deeper run in the postseason and trying to get our first GCC win. Overcoming adversity and embracing challenges is where we hope the girls find success this season, and in their future.

JV went into last week coming off a well earned win versus Bay Village, both the defense and offense operated well together capitalizing on what they have been working hard fine tuning at practice. This week we took a loss in our only game versus Jackson before the long weekend off. We closed out the game talking about what we will focus on tweaking for this upcoming week.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL CONTINUES TO COMPETE AGAINST TOP AREA TEAMS

The Varsity Team took on Mentor in a GCC matchup winning in 3 sets 25-21, 25-9, 25-14. Sophom*ore Luke Slonaker continued his dominance on the court with 6 blocks, 5 kills, 2 aces in the contest. John Papandreas (6 kills) led the offense along with Noah Kravec (5 kills) and Kevin Walko (5 kills). Walko (10 assists) and Anthony Pinzone (9 assists) kept the attacks fed on the strong offensive night. Leaders at the service stripe were Pinzone (2 aces/18 service points) and Papandreas (3 aces/10 service points). AJ Butera led the defense and kept the offense rolling with 6 digs.
The Boys Volleyball team traveled to Medina in a GCC matchup. Medina proved why they are 8-0 in conference play handing the Mustangs a 3 set defeat. 18-25, 10-25, 13-25. The boys team now stands at 7-7 and a 5-4 conference record.

BOYS TENNIS

Boys Varsity Tennis (3-6, 3-2 GCC):It was a busy week for the Mustang tennis team as they completed GCC play with four matches against Medina, Brunswick, Mentor and Shaker Heights before wrapping up the week at the Medina Doubles Tournament on Saturday. On Monday Strongsville fell to Medina 5-0. On Tuesday the team bounced back with a 3-2 victory over Brunswick; after dropping the first set on four of the five courts and losing the first two courts of the match, the Mustangs came back with a straight set victory at 2nd doubles (Jack Ingram/Jake Watts), a three set victory at 1st doubles (Xander Blair/Marko Ostryk) and Will Jevec clinched the match with a 4-6,6-0,6-2 win at third singles. The momentum continued on Thursday as the team defeated Mentor 4-1 with wins at both doubles courts (Blair/Ostryk & Ingram/Watts), 2nd singles (Param Oswal) and 3rd singles (Jevec). On Friday the team traveled to Shaker Heights for their GCC finale where they fell 5-0 despite very close matches at the doubles positions and 3rd singles (Carter Estrela) At the Medina Doubles Tournament the 3rd doubles team of Estrela/Watts led the team with a 4th place finish highlighted by a three set thriller in the first round, winning the third set tiebreak 10-8. On Tuesday it was another 3-2 victory – this time at Brunswick – as Philip Taran won at 1st singles and Evan Czech/Chaatwik Nettem won at 2nd doubles before Noel Tocaj broke a 2-2 tie when he claimed the final team point at third singles. On Friday the team participated in the JV GCC Tournament; the team had two teams participating highlighted by Taran winning at 1st singles and Jignesh Dave winning the 3rd singles bracket. NEW TICKETING PRICES FOR THE GCC

The Greater Cleveland Conference (GCC) will be raising admission ticket prices for all athletic events beginning in the 2023-2024 school year. In May, GCC principals approved the increase in athletic ticket prices after GCC Athletic Directors conducted a review of ticket prices for surrounding conferences in Northeast Ohio and found most to already be at these price levels. Ticket sales revenue generated from the events is the main source of funding used by member schools to cover costs for sports and the overall athletic department budget. While costs of game officials, security, sporting equipment, along with all the other costs associated with these events have increased and ticket prices have not. The increase is intended to help offset costs without sacrificing family, student and community experiences. This is the first price increase the GCC has issued since the formation of the league in 2020. The GCC consists of member schools Brunswick, Cleveland Heights, Euclid, Medina, Mentor, Shaker Heights, and Strongsville.
